As a young girl I began drawing house plans at the age of 5. Meticulously drawing and coloring in each space on the dot matrix printer paper with my “big” set of 48 crayolas. Running a piece of paper from one end of my living room to another, spending hours with nowhere to be. I miss those days…
Durning the next 12 years of my life, I travelled, I took art classes, I played musical instruments I learned to sing and I fell in love the world and people around me. Seeds were planted and I started down the path I am still walking today. My senior year in high school I took a field trip to my now alma mater to experience all the available options in the world of design. Fashion, Retail, Interiors, Hospitality. It was then as I sat over a drafting table, pen and paper in hand, designing a lighting plan, that I knew where I needed to be.
The next four years flew by and after graduation I ended up living outside of New York City. One of my favorite places on earth today. At first I worked at a retail company designing retail outlets, then for a large architectural firm designing commercial, educational, and healthcare facilities. These were beautifully grueling years. I learned so much, it is hard to explain. I am so grateful for each one of the them.
For a variety of reasons, I moved into a design related sales role and started pursuing residential design work on the side. I could not give it up completely. Then we moved. And moved again. Then we landed in Dallas, TX. With nothing to lose, SDG officially began in February 2012. With 12 years of industry experience, it was time. I knew the path I needed to walk. I knew it would be scary. But, step by step the last 4 years have been an exercise in faith, dedication and a labor of love. I know the next 4 are going to be even better!
As Mary Wilder said, “tell me what you are going to do with your wild and precious life.” Ok… I will. I am going to walk faithfully each and everyday trying to leave this world a little better than I found it. So, someday someone else might fall in love with what is around them, be inspired to take a chance and change their world they live in. XO – A
